Wan-Q was not “just” a Chinese restaurant and bar in Los Angeles, it was an institution. The restaurant had a loyal following, and was always filled with regulars, and had some of the best Chinese food on Pico Blvd. It was also known for serving “Chicago Style” which meant take out food, and was a bit of a novelty in the 50s. In the early 1960s, owner Benny Eng transitioned from Chinese restaurant to Polynesian restaurant when he saw the success of places like Trader Vics. He added tikis, a waterfall, float lamps, bamboo and thatch decor, and created a beautifully designed “Tropi-cocktail” menu. The venue later became famed music venue the Sugar Shack, and is currently housed by another Chinese restaurant, but sadly there are no remnants of Wan-Q.
