Tiki Bar T Shirt Club is excited to release an updated version of one of its OG designs, Kansas City’s The Castaways.
Opened in 1959, The Castaways was one of the city’s iconic music and tiki inspired venues. Designed by Charles Stark, The Castaways was described as ". . .something like Disneyland's Pirates of the Caribbean ride, to the point where papier-mache palm trees decorated the interior, and beach sand was spread here and there." The restaurant/bar also featured a waterfall wall with tropical flowers, an extensive and beautiful tiki cocktail menu, and Polynesian food. Every Saturday night there was a “hootenanny” where anyone could perform, but on other nights you might be lucky enough to hear locals and now legends like jazz singer Marilyn Maye and singer/songwriter Gene Clark. Clark performed at The Castaways with the Surf Riders, and later became a founding member of The Byrds.
