The Hawaiian Gardens Resort Motel on Oahu Lake in Holly, Michigan was founded by Fred and Jane Barton in the late 60s. It was Fred Barton’s dream to build a Polynesian resort where you could go “for a week of island fun.” Inspired by the Barton’s travels to Hawaii and New Zealand, Hawaiian and Maori imagery, A frame structures and modern shapes were used throughout the resort’s motel, restaurants, and lounges.

The Huki Lau Restaurant, The Polynesian Longhouse, The Kahului Room, the Watimo Grotto Lounge all had their own unique decor and menus. Lava rock, thatch, a simulation of a volcano erupting, glow worms and waterfalls were features. The Banyan Court overlooked Lake Oahu, and had 4 distinct rooms: The Tahitian Room, Samoan Room, Hawaiian Room and Monu Chief House. The resort had something for every guest from full table service and buffets to private rentals and dining in a geodesic dome. There was nightly entertainment, and during the day, guests could fish, golf and boat.

Hawaiian Gardens attracted famous guests like Mohammed Ali and Frank Sinatra.

Before becoming a victim to arson in 2003, the resort lived a few other lives as a disco, Alpine inspired resort and a rehab facility.
