“Where Paradise Meets the Cornfields”
The Aku-Tiki Room was part of the Andris Waunee Farm Restaurant located in rural Kewanee, Illinois. In 1953 Glen Andris bought the property which was, at the time, a roadhouse cafe and gas station. By 1955 the restaurant became the kind of place where “there was hardly a night when just about everyone in the dining room didn’t know each other.” You could stop in for your morning coffee, enjoy Henny Penny Chicken at dinner, or hold your wedding or family reunion there. In 1967 the Aku-Tiki Room was added; a testament to Glen and his wife Opal’s love of Acapulco and a tiki bar they would visit every winter. The Aku-Tiki Room had nightly entertainment, extensive Hawaiian themed decor, and a cocktail menu that was thoughtful and complete. In 2008, after Glen’s passing at age 91, much of the tiki decor was auctioned off, although his family kept a few special pieces.
The Tiki Bar T-shirt Club is excited to update and re-release the design of the special and unique establishment.
