In the 50s, when Polynesian - themed bowling centers were popping up around the country, Java Lanes quickly became a hot spot for food, drink and recreation. With the “glamorous” East Indies Dining Room (which later became the Lava Lounge), 32 automatic lanes, a “budget” coffee shop, piano bar, Las Vegas Shows, a Billiard Room, and wait for it... a NURSERY!. How would you like to go to a tiki bar/bowling alley with babysitting??
With some classic tiki inspired touches from the A frame entrance, a lava rock wall and tiki sculptures, guests described Java Lanes as “stepping into an island paradise.”
Java Lanes had a good run. It opened in 1958, and in the 90s was revitalized as a popular place to listen to live music. This Long Beach institution was sadly demolished in 2004 to make way for condos.
