Tonga Lei was a 9 room motel and restaurant, located on Pacific Coast Highway in Malibu, for nearly 3 decades. Opened in 1961, it had an extensive Polynesian food and beverage menu, the entrance was flanked with 2 giant Easter Island tikis, massive torches, and inside was a permanent thunderstorm. Around the late 70s, new owners added more motel rooms, and the restaurant became a Don the Beachcomber.

The motel was the site of several tv and movie locations and was often seen in “The Rockford Files” where Jim Rockford parked his trailer. After years of wear and tear, Tonga Lei was destroyed in 1987. From 2008-2011, in a corner of The Beachcomber Café at the nearby Malibu Pier, Bamboo Ben created an homage with a Tonga Lei Room located inside.
