The Aloha restaurant was a popular Polynesian restaurant in Rochester NY that opened in 1963 by Chwan Sheu and his sister Yu Tey Chi. Guests fondly remember the arched bridge over a lagoon and waterfall, the heavy wood doors with carved handles, palm trees, fountains, the murals of volcanoes and a bar designed to resemble the stern of a ship with island scenes visible through the windows.

In addition to the Polynesian decor, Sheu provided entertainers that sang songs like “Tiny Bubbles” to round out the island atmosphere. A variety of exotic tropical tiki drinks like the Mai Tai, the Zombie and the Scorpion Bowl were well known in the area but like most tiki cocktails, these recipes were strictly guarded secrets.

Mr. Sheu, was well respected for helping hundreds of Chinese immigrants build a new life in the states with several of his employees going on to open their own restaurants.  The Aloha restaurant expanded to include the Aloha Motel and two more restaurants before the original closed in 1988.
