Located in the heart of downtown Kansas City, on the 3rd floor mezzanine of the historic Hotel Phillips, The Tropics was a “pre-tiki” tropical lounge that opened in the early 1940s. The lounge was famous for an hourly tropical storm. The hotel's history flyer described it this way, “…The sound of thunder was piped in and the lights fluttered and went out. A mechanical hula girl would emerge from behind the bar and dance in a grass skirt while it rained behind the bar…”
A time machine would come in handy right about now; I would have loved to experience the storm along with a Rum Manhattan for a steep .50 cents, or a Polynesian Planters for .75 cents, while enjoying the live music of
Al Vierra's Hawaiian's.
We are unable to determine when The Tropics closed in the 60s, but you can keep The Tropics memory alive with this month's t-shirts.
