The Kon Tiki Hotel & Motel opened in 1962 and had a great run until it closed just about 30 years later. “A little bit of Waikiki in the heart of Phoenix,” Kon Tiki was a destination for business travelers, honeymooners, snowbirds and family vacations. With one of the most iconic signs of any tiki establishment, the hotel had a torch lit Lanai, Polynesian inspired food, beverages and entertainment, direct dial phones, air conditioning, and waterbeds. Of course you had to pay more for a room with a waterbed; it would run between $37-$45/night during the high season. And, your whole experience started when you were picked up in their airport shuttle which was a VW Van with a thatch roof. The Kon Tiki Hotel & Motel is the kind of place that makes me ache that it is not around anymore.
