Located in the small Southern California town of Bakersfield, The Surf Rider was the restaurant and lounge for the Wonder Lodge Motor Hotel. Opened in 1961, the establishment spared no expense to create the ultimate tiki atmosphere. With a price tag of $2,000,000, and Tiki heavyweights Oceanic Arts and Ed Brownlee doing the interior and exterior decor, The Surf Rider was an escape to the South Seas. The lounge had a Polynesian inspired menu, tropical drinks, entertainment, South Pacific murals, and a large Tahitian fishing trap which hung from the ceiling. The theme was carried through to the motel through its architecture, lagoon swimming pool, and landscaping. Although the Wonder Lodge Motor Hotel was over 100 miles away from a beach, guests were transported to a tropical paradise.
