Why the Castaways? The Tiki Bar T-Shirt Club idea was conceived in KC, so I thought we should stay close to home with a local Tiki Bar to get things started.
The Castaway opened in 1959 and was the first business to bring simulated palm trees to Main Street. Their logo design is a pretty common style that I'm finding among the tiki bars. It's only 1 color and the artwork is relatively simple but the hand drawn name is classic.
I created a prototype of this design with a faded yellow ink on the slightly heathered charcoal T Shirt and my friends loved it. For the production version, I adjusted the logo a bit to enhance the retro look.

I had no idea that KC had a few tiki bars until I started doing some research on the them. I found a treasure trove of Kansas City Tiki Bar info at Critiki.com to be very useful Special thanks to Joanna Marsh, who is a Project Archivist at the Kansas City Public Library, found and scanned this article for me.
