Sacramento's Coral Reef was a Tiki landmark in Sacramento from 1949-1994. The owners, Buddy and Roberta Maleville did the Polynesian décor with the help from a group of GIs.  According to their menu, "Each item was given careful thought and consideration before selection in our conscientious effort to effect the interesting, intimate atmosphere so essential to your relaxation and enjoyment." Their goal was to create "the most authentic atmosphere possible of a beachcomber's shack in Tahiti or Pago Pago." And they did just that decorating their 7 dining rooms with tiki heads, tiki torches, wooden masks, wood paneling, bamboo inlay and plants with large fronds.

There was a full cocktail and food menu with Planter's Punch for $1.50, a Mai Tai for $2.00, and a Fog Cutter for $3.00.  You could also get a complete Chinese "gourmet meal" for $2.95.

Many believe the Coral Reef to be Sacramento's most beloved restaurant that no longer exists.  Their building was torn down, but their iconic mask resides at the popular Bamboo Hut in San Francisco.
